Buying Firewood in New Jersey: What to Know
Buying firewood in fall in New Jersey
- This is peak season. Demand is highest, and seasoned wood can sell out, so order soon and get two or three quotes.
- Ask every dealer when the wood was cut and split. Wood split this year is often not dry enough to burn well this winter.
- Check a few pieces with a moisture meter when the load arrives (split one open and test the fresh face). Under 20% is ready to burn.
- Green wood bought now is for next winter, not this one.
A cord is the measure that matters
A full cord is a stacked pile 4 feet high by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long: 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, and it is the unit that makes prices comparable. New Jersey follows the national rule it adopts by regulation, so firewood must be sold by the cord (128 cubic feet) or a fraction of one, or by the cubic meter, and terms like "face cord", "rack", "pile", and "truckload" are banned. If a dealer quotes any other unit, ask how it converts to a full cord.
Seasoned, green, or kiln-dried
Moisture is what you are really paying for. Green wood is freshly cut, holds a lot of water, and is usually the cheapest, but it needs months of drying before it burns well. Seasoned wood has been split and air-dried, typically six months or more, and burns hotter and cleaner. Kiln-dried wood has the lowest moisture, lights easily, and costs the most. Burning wet wood wastes heat and builds creosote in your chimney, so ask every dealer when the wood was cut and split.
Delivery and stacking change the real price
Two quotes for the same price are not the same deal. Ask whether delivery to your town is included or billed by distance, whether there is a minimum order, and whether the load is dumped or stacked. Stacking is usually a separate charge when it is offered at all. The delivered, in-your-driveway cost is the number to compare.
Why so many dealers say "call for pricing"
Of the 37 New Jersey dealers listed here, only 16 give a price up front. Prices move with species, moisture, distance, and season, so many dealers prefer the phone. That opacity makes comparison shopping hard, which is the reason this site exists: we gather every price we can with its source, and one quote request reaches dealers who serve your area. Getting two or three quotes is the single most effective way to avoid overpaying.
How New Jersey prices compare
The median published full-cord price in New Jersey is $360, against $385 across all 8 states we cover (16 New Jersey prices and 92 overall, each checked in the last 45 days). Wood type and whether delivery and stacking are included move a quote more than the state does, so compare what each price includes.
New Jersey firewood rules
- Firewood must be advertised and sold only by the cord and fractions of a cord, or by the cubic meter. A cord is 128 cubic feet of wood stacked in a tight row with the pieces touching and parallel. Sellers may not use "face cord", "rack", "pile", "truckload", or similar terms. New Jersey makes this national standard part of its own rules. (NIST Handbook 130 (2018), Method of Sale section 2.4, adopted by New Jersey in N.J.A.C. 13:47C-3.1)
- When loose firewood is sold, the seller must give you a delivery ticket or sales invoice. It must list the seller's name and address, your name and address, the delivery date, the quantity delivered (and the quantity the price is based on, if different), the price, and a description of the wood, including any quality claims. (NIST Handbook 130 (2018), Method of Sale section 2.4.5, adopted by New Jersey in N.J.A.C. 13:47C-3.1)
- New Jersey adds its own rules. The delivery ticket or invoice must carry a serial number, and the seller must keep a copy for at least six months. Firewood can be checked by a weights and measures officer in transit, at delivery, or at any reasonable time after delivery. (N.J.A.C. 13:47C-3.1, Wood for use as fuel or flavoring (NJ Office of Weights and Measures))
- All of New Jersey is under a spotted lanternfly quarantine, and firewood of any species is a regulated article. Inspect vehicles, trailers, and outdoor items before you move them. Businesses that move items within or out of the quarantine zone need a state permit. (NJ Department of Agriculture, Spotted Lanternfly Homeowner Resources)
- Short-measure complaints go to the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures or to your county or municipal weights and measures office. (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs, Office of Weights and Measures)

Firewood Buying FAQ
How much does a cord of firewood cost in New Jersey?
Of the 37 New Jersey dealers listed on this page, 16 publish a full-cord price. Those published prices currently range from $225 to $700, with a median of $360. The rest quote by phone, so the best way to know your price is to call two or three dealers near you or send one quote request through this site.
What is a full cord of firewood?
A full cord is a stacked pile measuring 4 feet high by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long, which is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. New Jersey follows the national rule it adopts by regulation, so firewood must be sold by the cord (128 cubic feet) or a fraction of one, or by the cubic meter, and terms like "face cord", "rack", "pile", and "truckload" are banned. Whatever unit a dealer quotes, ask how it converts to a full cord before comparing prices.
What is the difference between seasoned, green, and kiln-dried firewood?
Green wood is freshly cut and still full of moisture; it is usually the cheapest but needs months of drying before it burns well. Seasoned wood has been split and air-dried, typically for six months or more, and burns hotter and cleaner. Kiln-dried wood is dried in a heated kiln to the lowest moisture content; it lights easily and burns cleanest, but costs the most. Burning wet wood wastes heat and increases creosote buildup in your chimney.
Why do most firewood dealers in New Jersey not publish prices?
Firewood pricing depends on wood species, moisture level, delivery distance, and season, so many dealers prefer to quote by phone. On this page, 16 of 37 listed dealers give a price up front. That lack of transparency is exactly why this site exists: we collect the prices we can get in one place and make it easy to request quotes from the rest.
Does the price of a cord include delivery and stacking?
Not always. Many dealers include delivery within a set radius and charge extra beyond it, and most charge separately for stacking, when they offer it at all. A dumped load in the driveway is the default. When you compare quotes, ask whether delivery to your town is included, whether there is a minimum order, and what stacking costs.
When is the best time to buy firewood in New Jersey?
Spring and summer generally give you the most choice. Dealers have more inventory, wood bought early has time to finish drying before heating season, and you avoid the fall rush when demand peaks and seasoned wood can sell out.
