Buying Firewood in Maine: What to Know
A cord is the measure that matters
A full cord is a stacked pile 4 feet high by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long: 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. It is the standard legal unit for firewood sales, and it is the only unit that makes prices comparable. "Face cord", "rick", and "truckload" are not standard sizes; if a dealer quotes one, ask how it converts to a full cord.
Seasoned, green, or kiln-dried
Moisture is what you are really paying for. Green wood is freshly cut, holds a lot of water, and is usually the cheapest, but it needs months of drying before it burns well. Seasoned wood has been split and air-dried, typically six months or more, and burns hotter and cleaner. Kiln-dried wood has the lowest moisture, lights easily, and costs the most. Burning wet wood wastes heat and builds creosote in your chimney, so ask every dealer when the wood was cut and split.
Delivery and stacking change the real price
Two quotes for the same price are not the same deal. Ask whether delivery to your town is included or billed by distance, whether there is a minimum order, and whether the load is dumped or stacked. Stacking is usually a separate charge when it is offered at all. The delivered, in-your-driveway cost is the number to compare.
Why so many dealers say "call for pricing"
Of the 39 Maine dealers listed here, only 11 publish a price online. Prices move with species, moisture, distance, and season, so many dealers prefer the phone. That opacity makes comparison shopping hard, which is the reason this site exists: we gather every published price with its source, and one quote request reaches dealers who serve your area. Getting two or three quotes is the single most effective way to avoid overpaying.
Checking a Maine dealer
The Maine Forest Service publishes resources for firewood buyers, including a roster of firewood dealers. Before ordering, you can check whether a dealer appears on the state roster and review the buying guidance there. Maine Forest Service.
Firewood Buying FAQ
How much does a cord of firewood cost in Maine?
Of the 39 Maine dealers listed on this page, 11 publish a full-cord price. Those published prices currently range from $285 to $475, with a median of $350. The rest quote by phone, so the best way to know your price is to call two or three dealers near you or send one quote request through this site.
What is a full cord of firewood?
A full cord is a stacked pile measuring 4 feet high by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long, which is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. It is the standard legal measure for firewood sales. Terms like "face cord", "rick", or "truckload" are not standard sizes, so always ask how they convert to a full cord before comparing prices.
What is the difference between seasoned, green, and kiln-dried firewood?
Green wood is freshly cut and still full of moisture; it is usually the cheapest but needs months of drying before it burns well. Seasoned wood has been split and air-dried, typically for six months or more, and burns hotter and cleaner. Kiln-dried wood is dried in a heated kiln to the lowest moisture content; it lights easily and burns cleanest, but costs the most. Burning wet wood wastes heat and increases creosote buildup in your chimney.
Why do most firewood dealers in Maine not publish prices?
Firewood pricing depends on wood species, moisture level, delivery distance, and season, so many dealers prefer to quote by phone. On this page, 11 of 39 listed dealers publish a price. That lack of transparency is exactly why this site exists: we collect the published prices in one place and make it easy to request quotes from the rest.
Does the price of a cord include delivery and stacking?
Not always. Many dealers include delivery within a set radius and charge extra beyond it, and most charge separately for stacking, when they offer it at all. A dumped load in the driveway is the default. When you compare quotes, ask whether delivery to your town is included, whether there is a minimum order, and what stacking costs.
How can I check a firewood dealer in Maine?
The Maine Forest Service publishes buyer resources, including a roster of firewood dealers. Checking a dealer against the state roster, confirming the price is quoted per cord, and asking for a delivery receipt showing the amount are all reasonable steps before ordering.
